Two Lights - Cape Elizabeth

This is a small gouache completed on location at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth.  It was one of a number of quick sketches I made throughout the trip for reference later.

Sometimes what I plan to paint - in this case a seascape - is not the result of my efforts.   

I used to really fight to stick to my preconception of what would make an engaging subject.  And while at times that struggle was productive.  More often than not - the result struck me as labored - because it was.

When I'm open to different possibilities - I don't even need to leave my studio to paint.  Intriguing subjects are everywhere.  When I'm more dogmatic in my mindset - I can drive all day and not be inspired to put brush to canvas or paper.

I've learned to enjoy the journey - wherever it leads.
