Oil on Canvas

I decided to try a different style with this one.  I was really playing with the paint - Thick on the brush and just laying it on the canvas.  A minimum of brushstrokes.  Especially the breaking waves.  I also used a very different palette than the normal colors I use.   All in all I was quite pleased by how it turned out.

Many years ago, I was buying and selling some paintings as a side gig.  An appraiser knew of my love of art and he shared with me a large number of paintings by William Harden Foster, who hunted with LL Bean and painted a number of covers for them including the cover of the first LL catalog (The moose hunter) .   They were remarkable to me in that, while the colors weren't necessarily "realistic" but everything worked.

What I did not realize at the time, was that painting for reproduction, particularly in those early days required the use of specific colors which reproduced well.  None the less, the ability of paintings to work regardless of the colors used was a revelation to me.
